Intro to Competition Class
This mandatory class for new shooters ensures safety and preparedness for action shooting at RRGC.
- Requirements: Familiarity with handguns, 1,000+ rounds through the competition pistol, and essential shooting skills.
- Equipment: A safe, operable pistol; protective gear; a proper holster; magazine pouches; and 150 rounds of ammo.
- What You’ll Learn: Safety protocols, equipment requirements, and action shooting fundamentals.
The class includes classroom instruction and range practice. Participants gain permission to join RRGC action events upon successful completion.
Register for Intro to Competition Class
This class is a prerequisite for new shooters at RRGC to participate on the Action Range and also in the sport of USPSA and other action pistol sports. In order to be able to shoot on the RRGC Action Range, you must take this class, it’s equivalent (see FAQs) or have a current classification in USPSA.
Prerequisites for this class:
- Knowledge and familiarity with proper operation of their hand gun
- People who have at least 1,000 rounds through the pistol they intend to compete with
- Must already possess the basic fundamentals on how to shoot their pistol safely and accurately
- Non-member price $160
- Member price $120 ($40 refunded upon completion)
Required equipment for the class:
- A safe and properly operating pistol or revolver that must be carried separate from your ammo (No ammo allowed in the Safe Area, which is the only place where you may handle and holster your pistol)
- Protective eye and ear equipment
- Quality holster that meets the following requirements:
- Completely covers the trigger and trigger guard
- Does not require a trigger finger button actuation to release pistol (no Serpa, Sigtac)
- Maintains rigidity when pistol is removed (no nylon, leather, suede, or other soft material)
- Worn outside of the pants on the belt at approximately 3 o’clock
- At least 2 belt-mounted magazine pouches
- At least 3 magazines
- 150 rounds of Ammo
- Food, water and appropriate dress for the weather
After successful completion of the class you will have been given:
- The absolute and nonnegotiable safety requirements of Richmond Rod & Gun Club and almost any IPSC or USPSA match range
- Overview of the sport of Action Shooting
- Etiquette of the sport
- Equipment required
- Volunteer responsibilities to keep the matches going
- Permission to participate in the activities on the RRGC Action Range
This class will not teach you:
- How to shoot
- Defensive handgun or self defense
Some of the other topics we will discuss are USPSA divisions, rules, and the classification system. We will discuss and practice, drawing, reloading, sight picture, trigger control, drills, moving through a stage, planning how to negotiate a stage, and range commands. We will also tell you what you can do for practice at home.
We will be in the classroom from 9AM until 11:00AM. Then, we will be on the range from 11:15AM until 1:30PM.
